Congratulations to The Davis Family of RIVERMEAD who took home two fantastic accolades from The British Farming Awards: Gold in the Dairy Farmer of the Year and Silver in the Farming Family of the Year categories. The Davis’ have had a wonderful year on the show circuit and have held a highly successful on farm open day and select sale. The following is borrowed from the British Farming Awards website: Westcott Farm is a tenanted farm owned by Devon County Council, with the Davis Family farming the 101 hectares (250 acres) on a farm business tenancy. A further 18 hectares (45 acres) are rented from the same landlord on a short-term tenancy and a further 22ha (55 acres) rented from a private landlord on a five-year FBT. The wider family are involved in the business but the main family members looking after the day-to-day running are Gordon, his sons Mark and Kevin alongside Richard Saxby. The farm is home to a herd of 280 Jersey cows and their followers with the milking portion producing about two million litres of high constituent milk each year. Rivermead Dairy also buys in an additional 4-5 m litres from Jersey milk producers across the south of England. Using their own fleet of tankers, this milk is then distributed to processors of high-end and speciality cheeses and desserts, alongside more traditional products such as Devonshire clotted cream, ice cream and yoghurts. Gordon says the setting up of this second dairy business has allowed the family to be in control of their own destiny. He says “diversifying has allowed us to purchase new equipment and invest in facilities and staff”. Noted for its success on the show circuit, the Rivermead herd is fully housed and Richard Saxby explains there is an emphasis on cow health and …
The display of Jerseys at All Breeds All Britain this last weekend was second to none. Our judge Ian Collins did a fantastic judge presiding over the breed classes, tapping out his final line-up as follows: Champion: RIVERMEAD Victorious Sangria Reserve Champion: RIVERMEAD Bubba Tweeny Honourable Mention: TREGIBBY Victorious Sunshine In the Showmanship classes, Anna Stable certainly had her work cut out, with the final tap going to Abi Marshall, with Ellie Saxby in Reserve with Hannah Saxby as Honourable Mention. Due to unforeseen circumstances, Anna Stable will now be judging the Coloured Breeds Showmanship Classes on Saturday at All Breeds All Britain. Anna hails from the Thurlstone herd of Jerseys and previously worked with Churchroyd Dairy Shornhorns. Anna has judged coloured calves and their handlers at several shows around the country, including Royal Cheshire.
What a fantastic day for the breed at the 2022 Jersey Cattle Society National Show which saw all four Interbreed titles at The Dairy Show, being awarded to the Jersey breed. The first of which was the Interbreed Showmanship title which was won by the 21st birthday girl, Emily Davis under judge Mr Mike Deakins. The next star of the show was exhibited by James Evans. FUTUREDREAMS Valentines Magic Veronica lifted the title of Interbreed Champion Calf under judges Mr Brian Weatherup, Mr Mike Deakins and Mr Duncan Hunter. Moving on the the milking classes, judged by Mr Duncan Hunter saw BLUEGRASS Dancing Hair Bobbles scoop the Supreme Heifer Interbreed Championship for Barry, Jenny and Claire Daw. The atmosphere was electric in the Supreme Interbreed judging ring with all the days judges scoring the individual champions publicly. Tensions were high as RIVERSIDE Engineer Hazelnut 2 scooped the highest points and was crowned Champion for Ben and Nia Llewellin. A truly wonderful show was had by all with an extremely high quality level of Jerseys forward which was reflected in the overall interbreed results. Thank you to all judges, stewards, sponsors and of course The Royal Bath & West of England Society for putting on such a great show once again.

Please note, we have been sent the following amendment with regard to the calf handling rules at ABAB: In the rules on page 9 can you change Rule 4 to read ‘ Entries will be accepted for Handlers 5 years of age and over on 1st January 2022. However, the Coloured breeds committee reserve the right for the stewards to ask any handlers who were under the age of 7 on 1st January not to enter the ring if they do not show good control of their calf, without assistance, in the collecting area. This decision has been taken to protect the health and safety of all exhibitors, whilst allowing younger experienced handlers to compete Entries close this FRIDAY! No late entries will be accepted. We’re raising money for Brain Tumour Research, in memory of Holstein UK Group CEO Sue Cope. Cycle for Sue is in full ‘spin’ at UK Dairy Day to raise money for Brain Tumour Research, in memory of Holstein UK Group CEO and UK Dairy Day Event Director Sue Cope. Earlier this year, Sue lost her short but courageous battle with a brain tumour and her family, friends and colleagues have joined together to cycle two spin bikes a total of 867 miles. Bike one is travelling the distance from Lands’ End to UK Dairy Day in Telford, Shropshire, whilst bike two travels from John O’Groats to the event. The Holstein UK Group were devastated to lose their leader, inspiration, colleague and friend who touched so many people over the 25+ years she worked for the company. Sue was the backbone of the company and so passionate in her role. She has mentored many staff over the years and was dedicated to supporting and driving staff development throughout the company. Sue was instrumental in the organisation of UK Dairy Day since its inception in 2014 and, in 2021, she was presented with the ‘Howard Sneesby Award’ for her fantastic contribution over the years to the National Holstein Show. Sue’s immediate family and friends joined the UK Dairy Day team on Sunday 11th September to officially launch ‘Cycle for Sue’. Speaking on behalf of the family, Sue’s partner Chris Rossington said: “Thank you for everyone for participating. It all makes a difference. To be diagnosed with an incurable brain cancer is bad enough but with a cruel twist it also slowly robs a person of all their faculties too. Hopefully, with what can be raised here at UK Dairy Day, we can help inch closer to finding a cure or at the …

The Directors of the Jersey Cattle Society of the UK are pleased to announce that Pedigree Livestock Services have been selected to replace Jolly British as our Company Secretary. Emma Horn will remain in position during the hand over which should be completed by the end of May. In the meantime points of contact for members continue to be Emma, Becky our Field Officer and Claire at NBDC animal registrations. Pedigree Livestock Services (PLS) specialise working in partnership with Livestock Breed Societies providing a bespoke administrative support service. The company can provide as little or as much resource to any Society from their dedicated Pedigree Livestock Services team. Pedigree Livestock Services will be providing administration support to the Jersey Cattle Society of the UK and their members and will be taking up the position of Company Secretary for the breed. Taking up the contact role for the breed and their members is Pedigree Livestock Services general manager, Heather Pritchard. Commenting on this new working partnership, Andy Ryder managing director of Pedigree Livestock Services said the team can deliver and assist with the Society’s requirements as we offer over 150 years combined experience in the livestock and agricultural industry. We are looking forward to working with the members of the Jersey Cattle Society of the UK.
Travelling over from Ireland is Eddie Barrett to judge this year’s Jersey classes. Eddie is the Dairy Breeding Programme Manager with the National Cattle Breeding Centre (NCBC) in Ireland. He, along with his team, is responsible for the delivery of an elite selection of top dairy sires for the benefit of NCBC shareholders and farmers and the export requirements of “Ireland Genetics”. Eddie grew up on the family farm which is home to the Laurelmore Herd. He is a member of the IHFA official Holstein judges’ panel, having been first selected in 1992. He is also on the Jersey Cattle Society of the UK Judging Panel. He has officiated as Master Judge for IHFA Judging Conference and been a member of the selection panel for the IHFA Holstein team at the European Show in Brussels. Eddie has also been on official breed and inter-breed judging assignments in Ireland, the UK and France, including the Interbreed Judge at RUAS Balmoral and Welsh Dairy Show, along with numerous national and regional Holstein and Jersey herd competition assignments.
The first of the 2022 Judges Workshops was held on Saturday at Clandeboye, by kind permission of Mark Logan and the Clandeboye Estate Co Ltd team. We were delighted to have so many potential future judges join us to experience the process of judging and to encourage their thoughts towards considering joining the panel in the future. Once again, we thank the team at Clandeboye and to all those who attended. Please remember you can still book our place at Clifton and Rivermead via the JCS Team.

After over a decade of service to the Jersey Cattle Society, Emma Horn is standing down from her role as Company Secretary. Emma and her team at Jolly British Business Support Ltd have been at the heart of the effective and professional management of our Society. During Emma’s time with us, she has worked studiously to support the board, manage the society finances, processes and services, and delivered projects including the design and development of the JCS website, online CRM membership platform and electronic newsletter. Alongside her managerial work, Emma and her team provided the organisational and administration support for Membership, Herd Book, Registrations and Society events. I am sure, as I speak on behalf of the board, Emma and her team will be missed by many. With the support of Emma, the search is now on to find a new person or team to fulfill the important roles carried out by Jolly British, and to work closely with Becky Hurd (FSO) and Claire Cooksey (Animal Registrations). I use this opportunity to ask members who may know or who can recommend a suitable candidate(s) to contact either myself, a fellow member of the Board or indeed Emma. “We are farming over 1,500 cows in total. Jerseys have a better feed conversion rate. We can stock more per acre and their high solid milk best fits our Arla contract. Jerseys also have good fertility and feet and play a key role in creating a successful dairy business” John Cookson, Yareal Dairy Operations Manager Click to view full article: https://jerseycattlesociety.uk/wp-content/uploads/2022/03/Yareal-21032022.pdf

For 2021 we took the decision to re-brand the annual National Show, held at The Dairy Show, Shepton Mallet as The National Youngstock Show. At the time of planning Covid-19 regulations were still hitting hard so we took the step to go ahead in supporting our usual venue in their chosen format for this year. The quality of calves forward was strong with judge David Christophers of Trerose Jerseys finding his Champion in Rivermead Bubba Lexi from The Davis Family, Devon. Lexi then went on to lift the Championship crown against 5 breeds and across a full panel of judges, scoring maximum points in the paddle board system. We would like to take this opportunity as a Society to thank the Royal Bath & West of England Society for their hard work in putting this event on in such challenging times and we look forward to joining you again in 2022. With this time of year resonating with the golden colours of Autumn the latest Craven Dairy Auction at CCM Skipton did similarly with a fine entry of over 40 lots sold to include Holsteins, Ayrshire, Red and White Holstein and the Autumn Jersey sale, held for the third time and again sold by leading breed auctioneer Mark Davis, of Devon-based Kivells. The main event was the Autumn coloured breeds sale, which was dominated by Jerseys and drew sellers from Scotland down to Shropshire. While many ringside had travelled long distances others were able to bid from the comfort of their own homes via the increasingly popular online platform, with potential purchasers from seven counties in England and Scotland registered on the sales sheet. While buyers were selective, all but two lots forward headed to new homes. Trade peaked at £2,100 for a widely admired long, hard-topped calf showing great udder potential and ready to compete at the forthcoming All Breeds All Britain Calf Show at Peterborough in mid-October. Well presented by Ben Coates, and his parents, Stephen and Rachel, who run Regatta Jerseys in Baildon, this November, 2020, heifer sired by Video is a maternal sister to the Champion Jersey Heifer in Milk from this year’s Great Yorkshire Show and is from an EX91 7500kg plus dam. As well as being a potential fifth generation VG or EX, she stays in Yorkshire, heading to a new young enthusiast, Izzy Lee, of Easingwold. Milking cows and heifers in the Jerseys were a solid trade without featuring any standout prices. They peaked at £1,890 for Bayview Disco Eliza 14 from the Pye family, who run Bayview Jerseys in Arkholme, Carnforth. Fresh since mid-August and giving over 23kg per day, with nine generations of VG or EX behind her, she heads to the …

Pedigree Jerseys were the number 1 choice for re-stocking at Abbott Lodge and The Scottish Farmer found out why… Steven & Claire Bland and their children Robert & Elizabeth lost their black & white herd to Foot & Mouth disease in 2001. It was then that radical changes took place and the herd was re-stocked with pedigree Jerseys. Herd facts: 210-220 pedigree Jersey cows Herd yield 7400 litres at 5.6% Butterfat and 3.9% Protein The herd is milked through 3 Fullwood Merlin2 robots with an average of 2.7 milkings per day per cow High yielders are giving 45 – 52 litres per day with lactations regularly over 12,000 litres in 30 days Some cows choose to visit the robot 4 times a day, allowing them to express their genetic potential Milk is sold to Grahams The Family Dairy as well as being made in to Ice Cream which is sold on farm through their tea room and locally. The Bland family make up to 40 different flavours of ice cream! Fertility has also improved since the robots have been in, making it easier to see individual cow behaviour. All cows and heifers are served up to two times with sexed semen with a split od 70% American and 30% Danish. Steven is convinced that good cow families are the strength behind a good breeding animal. Steven describes the herd as, “the ultimate free range cows” To read the full story, click the link: https://jerseycattlesociety.uk/wp-content/uploads/2021/06/Scottish-Farmer.pdf
The Scottish family dairy introduces a new luxury yogurt to their iconic Gold Top range – a first for Scotland! A first for Scotland, the yogurt is a new addition to the Scotland’s No1 Chosen Brand’s iconic Gold Top range of products, which include award winning milk, butter, and cream. Gold Top Luxury Yogurt is made with the freshest Jersey milk from the Graham’s own herd of Golden Girls in Stirlingshire. So, with the addition of the opulent layer of strawberry or salted caramel, Graham’s Gold Top Luxury Yogurt is THE new must-have treat! Robert Graham, Managing Director, Graham’s The Family Dairy, “Innovation and product development are something we at Graham’s pride ourselves on, and we have been busy this year developing a host of new dairy products, including our new Gold Top luxury layered yogurt using our Jersey milk. As an amalgamation of our existing yoghurt and our iconic Gold Top Jersey milk range, we worked with external research agency, TRKR, as well as our own Graham’s Taste Testers to gain category and customer insight into this new product innovation, at concept level. Our own customer feedback was overwhelmingly positive. They wanted us to develop a luxury yogurt made with our Jersey Gold Top milk. So, as we continue to create delicious and nutritional dairy products with fresh local milk for our customers from all over Scotland, as well as the rest of the UK, we hope that everyone …

Due to the onset and continuation of the covid pandemic this year, which resulted in nearly all of the county and national shows for 2020 having been cancelled and thus directly affecting the Society’s ability to hold its annual All Britain competition, the Society decided to hold instead an on-farm photographic competition to provide all members with an opportunity to collectively take part in something positive. Mark Logan, JCS Director, set a range of classes for all the members to enter as well as specifically two classes just for Jersey Young Breeders to enable them to submit their own photos they had taken on farm under the clases ‘JYB scenic’ and JYB Quirky’. Due to the number of entries received of photos of JYB members, an additional class was added at the Judging stage as we wanted to recognise the photos of JYB members in the results as well as those photographs taken by young members. Upon the close of entries on 30th September, professional photographer, Jane Steel kindly took the challenge of judging the entries fro each class and selecting a Champion and Reserve for each, as well as collectively with JCS and the editors of the Society publication The UKJT magazine, the winning photo for the coveted front cover of the November Edition of the UKJT. Congratulations to Scott McGill of Kerricks Jerseys whose photograph took the coveted place front cover shot for the November edition of The UKJT, as winner of the scenic section of the online photographic competition: To view the details of the JCS On-Farm Photographic Competition as published in the November Edition of the UKJT – view here or visit the JCS Members Area to read the electronic online edition of The JCS UKJT. We are deeply saddened to report the passing of Mary Collins of Churchroyd Dairy Shorthorns and the Churchroyd Jersey prefix. Mary will be so very missed by the family she held so dear and the entire dairying community. Mary’s passion and commitment to the industry was outstanding and this reflected in the incredible levels of achievements by her family within their own herd. We will all miss the warmth of Mary’s personality, a lady who always had time for everyone but we will hold the memories in our hearts always. Our sincere condolences go to all at Churchroyd at this very sad time.
2020 has certainly been an unusual year. Barry, Jenny & Claire Daw wished to mark the hard work of our NHS and associated frontline workers with a fundraiser. The Daw Family decided to raise money in the form of a raffle to win Whisky the calf from their prestigious BLUEGRASS Jersey Herd based in Hertfordshire. Tickets were sold for £20.00 each, raising a fantastic £3870.00 for Mind and the NHS.
