The Bland Family & Clifton Jerseys Feature in The Scottish Farmer

Industry Insight News, Latest News, Members & Breeders News

Pedigree Jerseys were the number 1 choice for re-stocking at Abbott Lodge and The Scottish Farmer found out why… Steven & Claire Bland and their children Robert & Elizabeth lost their black & white herd to Foot & Mouth disease in 2001. It was then that radical changes took place and the herd was re-stocked with pedigree Jerseys. Herd facts: 210-220 pedigree Jersey cows Herd yield 7400 litres at 5.6% Butterfat and 3.9% Protein The herd is milked through 3 Fullwood Merlin2 robots with an average of 2.7 milkings per day per cow High yielders are giving 45 – 52 litres per day with lactations regularly over 12,000 litres in 30 days Some cows choose to visit the robot 4 times a day, allowing them to express their genetic potential Milk is sold to Grahams The Family Dairy as well as being made in to Ice Cream which is sold on farm through their tea room and locally. The Bland family make up to 40 different flavours of ice cream! Fertility has also improved since the robots have been in, making it easier to see individual cow behaviour. All cows and heifers are served up to two times with sexed semen with a split od 70% American and 30% Danish. Steven is convinced that good cow families are the strength behind a good breeding animal. Steven describes the herd as, “the ultimate free range cows” To read the full story, click the link: https://jerseycattlesociety.uk/wp-content/uploads/2021/06/Scottish-Farmer.pdf

The Scottish family dairy introduces a new luxury yogurt to their iconic Gold Top range – a first for Scotland! Today, Graham’s The Family Dairy announce the launch of Gold Top Luxury Yogurt, a new luxuriously layered yogurt made with deliciously creamy Jersey milk. A first for Scotland, the yogurt is a new addition to the Scotland’s No1 Chosen Brand’s iconic Gold Top range of products, which include award winning milk, butter, and cream. Gold Top Luxury Yogurt is made with the freshest Jersey milk from the Graham’s own herd of Golden Girls in Stirlingshire. So, with the addition of the opulent layer of strawberry or salted caramel, Graham’s Gold Top Luxury Yogurt is THE new must-have treat! Robert Graham, Managing Director, Graham’s The Family Dairy, “Innovation and product development are something we at Graham’s pride ourselves on, and we have been busy this year developing a host of new dairy products, including our new Gold Top luxury layered yogurt using our Jersey milk. As an amalgamation of our existing yoghurt and our iconic Gold Top Jersey milk range, we worked with external research agency, TRKR, as well as our own Graham’s Taste Testers to gain category and customer insight into this new product innovation, at concept level. Our own customer feedback was overwhelmingly positive. They wanted us to develop a luxury yogurt made with our Jersey Gold Top milk. So, as we continue to create delicious and nutritional dairy products with fresh local milk for our customers from all over Scotland, as well as the rest of the UK, we hope that everyone …

Results of the 2020 JCS Jersey On-Farm Photographic Competition

Latest News, Members & Breeders News

Due to the onset and continuation of the covid pandemic this year, which resulted in nearly all of the county and national shows for 2020 having been cancelled and thus directly affecting the Society’s ability to hold its annual All Britain competition, the Society decided to hold instead an on-farm photographic competition to provide all members with an opportunity to collectively take part in something positive. Mark Logan, JCS Director, set a range of classes for all the members to enter as well as specifically two classes just for Jersey Young Breeders to enable them to submit their own photos they had taken on farm under the clases ‘JYB scenic’ and JYB Quirky’. Due to the number of entries received of photos of JYB members, an additional class was added at the Judging stage as we wanted to recognise the photos of JYB members in the results as well as those photographs taken by young members. Upon the close of entries on 30th September, professional photographer, Jane Steel kindly took the challenge of judging the entries fro each class and selecting a Champion and Reserve for each, as well as collectively with JCS and the editors of the Society publication The UKJT magazine, the winning photo for the coveted front cover of the November Edition of the UKJT. Congratulations to Scott McGill of Kerricks Jerseys whose photograph took the coveted place front cover shot for the November edition of The UKJT, as winner of the scenic section of the online photographic competition: To view the details of the JCS On-Farm Photographic Competition as published in the November Edition of the UKJT – view here or visit the JCS Members Area to read the electronic online edition of The JCS UKJT. Sad passing of Lady Dufferin, Clandeboye Jerseys

Industry Insight News, Members & Breeders News

It is with great sadness the Society reports the passing of Lady Dufferin of Clandeboye Jerseys on 27th October 2020.  Lady Dufferin had been a member of the Society for over 20 years and a strong advocate of the Jersey breed.  The Clandeboye herd was established in 2000 and has produced some of the very best, award winning, pedigree Jersey cattle in the UK.  In 2007, Lady Dufferin launched Clandeboye Yogurts, a range of hand crafted yogurts made from the milk of the pedigree Clandeboye Holstein and Jersey herds.  Clandeboye Yogurts have since become the largest yogurt producers in Northern Ireland, supplying all the major supermarkets in NI as well as Aldi in Ireland.  Alongside this, Clandeboye supply small local retailers and also produce some own brand products for Spar and Starbucks in Ireland. Our sincere condolences go to all at Clandeboye Estates at this very sad time. Due to Covid-19 restrictions, there will be a private funeral at Clandeboye in accordance with Lady Dufferin’s wishes and memorials in celebration of her life at both Clandeboye and in London. If you would like to send your condolences to Clandeboye Estate, please write to: Mr Mark Logan, Clandeboye Estate Manager, Clandeboye Estate, Bangor, Co. Down, BT19 1RN

The widely anticipated first coloured breeds sale at CCM Skipton did not disappoint, with a new auction centre dairy record price established when the much admired VG88-2yrs headliner, Cherryview Legal M Lacey, was knocked down to an undisclosed buyer for 5,500gns, with her yearling daughter by Citation heading to the same home for 2,200gns. Still giving 21kg per day, Cherryview Legal M Lacey is due again in mid-November and again to Citation, being a potential third generation straight EX for the Lacey cow family that has been so noteworthy and consistently reliable for Mrs Judith Waring, who has regrettably dispersed her Cherryview herd at Cherry Burton, Beverley. Of the 31 animals in the dispersal portion of this sale, ranging from the seventh calver Cherryview Minister Lacey EX92-5E, who sold for 2,700gns to Richard Pilkington, Shordley – with her October 2019 daughter following to Messrs Young, Cumbria, at 2,100gns – to the March, 2020-born Cherryview Citation Lacey, a total of 17 Laceys successfully sold. Furthermore, the Cherryview dispersal averaged a whopping £1,486 per life. CCM’s dairy sales co-ordinator Sarah Liddle said: “A packed, socially distanced and face-masked audience gathered to witness this great sale that offered much to the crowd gathered ringside, and CCM were fortunate that their perspex ‘boothing’ and online bidding facility afforded potential purchasers capacity to bid safely and view the stock on sale.” In total, 39 buyers were recorded purchasing the 87 animals forward on the day, the volume purchaser being Andrew McKay, Newton Stewart, who bought eight. A strong Yorkshire following was in fine buying form, with other purchases also heading to Lancashire, Cumbria, Scotland, Northern Ireland, Lincolnshire, Shropshire, Cheshire, Durham and East Yorkshire. This was said to highlight CCM’s central location in the country and many people visiting the auction site for the first time …

Fizz bubbles to the top of online Elite Sale

Members & Breeders News, Sale Report

Ferocious bidding took place throughout the Spotlight Sale of Elite Pedigree Dairy Cattle which this year, due to Covid-19, auctioneers Greenslade Taylor Hunt held as an online auction. With it being the first Live Pedigree Elite Dairy Sale the interest generated was incredible with registrations on the bidding site being welcomed from across the world including potential buyers registered from New Zealand, Germany, Denmark and France. With anticipation building during the three days that the sale was live, as expected most of the bidding took place in the final moments with Fizz taking the top spot! Layward Cosmo Starry Fizz the Jersey who was bred from three generations of world renowned show winners topped the sale at £7,100.  She was the only daughter of Elliotts Cosmo Starry Fizz in the UK and her 3rd dam was no other than Huronia Centurion Veronica Ex97 who was supreme champion at the World Dairy Expo. Bidding spanned the breadth of the UK with the final bid coming from the Fleming Family from Ireland for their Potterswalls Herd. Topping the Holsteins at £5,600 was the much admired Withamvale Chief Rae who was bred from 10 generations of Excellent dams that averaged 93.5 points and hailed from the illustrious Sterndale line of the Rae’s.  Again bidders from Wales, Scotland and England were beaten by Conor Mcaufield who takes her back to Ireland for his Lissue herd. The Rae’s created a lot of interest throughout the sale with two red daughters from Rockset Integral Rae VG87 selling for £4100 & £3800. The Wiltor herd entered some outstanding lots in the sale and took the next two top prices.  At £5,000 was the stylish red calf from the Jodie family and at £4900 was a King Doc from the same family as Jacobs Goldwyn Britany, they were …

Robert Sloan is the winner of the 2019 NMR RABDF Gold Cup; the UK dairy industry’s most prestigious award

Members & Breeders News

Robert runs the 180-cow Townlaw Holstein herd and 60-cow Darnlaw Jersey Herd at Darnlaw Farm, in Auchinleck near Ayr, with his parents Bryce and Anne and wife Emma. The Sloan family has adopted a proactive approach to succession and Robert, who’s 37, became a partner in the business at 24. He admits that the mix of his youthful enthusiasm and his father’s experience and wisdom has driven the business forward in the past decade. The herd has been based at Darnlaw for more than 40 years and in 2011 the decision was made to switch to robotic milking, in a new purpose-built shed on a greenfield site, on the farm. “Back then we needed to start three-times-a-day milking to improve the welfare and longevity of our 120 high yielding cows, but finding staff prepared to do this and to work the antisocial hours was a challenge,” says Robert. “So we decided on installing robots in a new building,” says Robert. The herd is housed all year round and milked through three Lely robots. “Our system works well. We employ three local men and each staff member works up to 50 hours a week – but rarely more than four and a half days a week. This gives our staff time to pursue their own interests and have time off at the weekend. “The level of automation on our farm allows for flexible working hours with minimal anti-social labour requirements,” he adds. “Everyone has their own individual responsibilities, but they are also expected to step in and provide relief for any job on the farm. It is this diversity that keeps everyone challenged and motivated.” Another major change and ‘diversification’ took place in 2016 when they took the opportunity to fulfil a specialist Jersey milk contract from milk buyer Graham’s Dairy and …

Approved Registered Cattle – Animal Traceability

Members & Breeders News

The Approved Registered Cattle Service is service available to all JCS members. The Approved Registered Cattle (ARCTM) mark provides traceability of registered cattle to the industry with the integral tissue bank providing access to each animal’s DNA. This can be called upon at any time, allowing increased knowledge through genomic evaluation and parentage verification. Jersey Cattle Society members can purchase exclusively branded ARCTM tissue tags at very competitive rates. These tags provide differentiation for animals in pedigree herds, whilst also allowing the quick and easy submission of a DNA vial when registering an animal. JCS members can view the full brochure and information about the Approved Registered Cattle in the Members Area. Click here to visit the Members Documents page, and look for ‘ARC Booklet’ in the ‘Membership Services’ document category.
