2021 National Youngstock Show

Industry Insight News, Latest News, Members & Breeders News

For 2021 we took the decision to re-brand the annual National Show, held at The Dairy Show, Shepton Mallet as The National Youngstock Show. At the time of planning Covid-19 regulations were still hitting hard so we took the step to go ahead in supporting our usual venue in their chosen format for this year. The quality of calves forward was strong with judge David Christophers of Trerose Jerseys finding his Champion in Rivermead Bubba Lexi from The Davis Family, Devon. Lexi then went on to lift the Championship crown against 5 breeds and across a full panel of judges, scoring maximum points in the paddle board system. We would like to take this opportunity as a Society to thank the Royal Bath & West of England Society for their hard work in putting this event on in such challenging times and we look forward to joining you again in 2022. The Bland Family & Clifton Jerseys Feature in The Scottish Farmer

Industry Insight News, Latest News, Members & Breeders News

Pedigree Jerseys were the number 1 choice for re-stocking at Abbott Lodge and The Scottish Farmer found out why… Steven & Claire Bland and their children Robert & Elizabeth lost their black & white herd to Foot & Mouth disease in 2001. It was then that radical changes took place and the herd was re-stocked with pedigree Jerseys. Herd facts: 210-220 pedigree Jersey cows Herd yield 7400 litres at 5.6% Butterfat and 3.9% Protein The herd is milked through 3 Fullwood Merlin2 robots with an average of 2.7 milkings per day per cow High yielders are giving 45 – 52 litres per day with lactations regularly over 12,000 litres in 30 days Some cows choose to visit the robot 4 times a day, allowing them to express their genetic potential Milk is sold to Grahams The Family Dairy as well as being made in to Ice Cream which is sold on farm through their tea room and locally. The Bland family make up to 40 different flavours of ice cream! Fertility has also improved since the robots have been in, making it easier to see individual cow behaviour. All cows and heifers are served up to two times with sexed semen with a split od 70% American and 30% Danish. Steven is convinced that good cow families are the strength behind a good breeding animal. Steven describes the herd as, “the ultimate free range cows” To read the full story, click the link: https://jerseycattlesociety.uk/wp-content/uploads/2021/06/Scottish-Farmer.pdf

Sad passing of Lady Dufferin, Clandeboye Jerseys

Industry Insight News, Members & Breeders News

It is with great sadness the Society reports the passing of Lady Dufferin of Clandeboye Jerseys on 27th October 2020.  Lady Dufferin had been a member of the Society for over 20 years and a strong advocate of the Jersey breed.  The Clandeboye herd was established in 2000 and has produced some of the very best, award winning, pedigree Jersey cattle in the UK.  In 2007, Lady Dufferin launched Clandeboye Yogurts, a range of hand crafted yogurts made from the milk of the pedigree Clandeboye Holstein and Jersey herds.  Clandeboye Yogurts have since become the largest yogurt producers in Northern Ireland, supplying all the major supermarkets in NI as well as Aldi in Ireland.  Alongside this, Clandeboye supply small local retailers and also produce some own brand products for Spar and Starbucks in Ireland. Our sincere condolences go to all at Clandeboye Estates at this very sad time. Due to Covid-19 restrictions, there will be a private funeral at Clandeboye in accordance with Lady Dufferin’s wishes and memorials in celebration of her life at both Clandeboye and in London. If you would like to send your condolences to Clandeboye Estate, please write to: Mr Mark Logan, Clandeboye Estate Manager, Clandeboye Estate, Bangor, Co. Down, BT19 1RN

Breeding for improved health and fitness

Industry Insight News

As featured in The UKJT March Edition, AHDB Genetics Manager Fern Pearston Explains the heritability of health and fitness traits and how selection for these traits could improve herd management. Health and fitness traits are often overlooked due to their lower heritability but these traits can be improved on farm by selecting the right sires to use on your herd, in addition to improved management techniques. After all, improved genetics for these traits will make management of the herd easier and who wouldn’t want that? The story so far… The Somatic Cell Count (SCC), Lifespan and Fertility indexes have been available for use in bull selection for a number of years, however the trends found when looking at pedigree Jersey cows show not all of these traits appear to have been considered when selecting bulls. Figures 1A, 1B and 1C show the trend for pedigree Jersey females in the milking herd (represented by the solid line) and young females yet to join the milking herd (represented by the dashed line). The vertical dotted lines indicate the year these indexes were made available for selecting bulls. The milking cow Predicted Transmitting Abilities (PTAs) are based on on-farm and milk records, whereas the young animals have their PTAs based on parent average calculations. Please note, 2019 is not a complete data set, so is an indication of this birth year. Genetics for Lifespan in the national herd shows an improving trend (Figure 1A). Lifespan improved by 30 days between 2006 and 2016, that’s one month more in lactation on average! This continues to improve with the young animals entering the herd in coming years. SCC has fluctuated over the last two decades, peaking in 2015 at +1% (Figure 1B). PTAs greater than zero are unfavourable for SCC and indicates that this PTA …

VikingGenetics and the Jersey Cattle Society sign strategic agreement

Industry Insight News

VikingGenetics (VG) and the Jersey Cattle Society of the United Kingdom (JCSUK) have announced a joint agreement which will increase the ambition and scope of each organisation’s Jersey breeding programme. The agreement sees selected cattle from UK Jersey producers’ herds being genomically tested by VikingGenetics and offers the opportunity for animals with the highest genetic merit to be used in VG’s VikingJersey breeding programme. The scheme is mutually beneficial to both UK Jersey breeders and VikingGenetics. Firstly, it enlarges the gene pool from which VG can select its potential bull mothers and secondly, it broadens the opportunity for UK breeders to be rewarded for producing Jerseys with internationally competitive indexes and pedigrees. The animals will be identified using Viking’s selection index, the Nordic Total Merit (NTM), and those with the best bloodlines could go on to be potential bull mothers or used for embryo contracts through the VikingJersey programme. Peter Larson, Manager for VikingJersey says: “JCSUK represents the second-largest Jersey population in Europe and has many interesting outcross pedigree combinations and a wide diversity of bloodlines. “Over many years it has developed its Jersey from the native UK and Jersey Island base, adding bloodlines from the USA, Canada and New Zealand. As a result, it has more diverse pedigrees than those commonly seen in many other countries, including the VikingGenetics nations of Denmark, Sweden and Finland. “The larger genetic base of the combined Nordic and UK populations now makes ours the third largest Jersey breeding programme in the world, and equips it well to produce the 35-40 young Jersey bulls we expect to join our stud every year.” John Whitby, Chairman of JCSUK, says the breed society is delighted to have forged this arrangement which gives its members the opportunity to take part in an important international breeding scheme. He says: …
